Nassau and Suffolk counties added 31,500 nonfarm jobs in the last year, according to a new report from the New York State Department of Labor.
The gain in jobs from August 2021 to August 2022 was the second most of other regions in the state, trailing only New York City which added 289,500 jobs during the same period.
However, percentagewise, Long Island’s nonfarm payrolls increased by 2.5 percent year over year, which paled in comparison with job growth in other regions, including Ithaca (5 percent); the Buffalo area (3.9 percent); and Orange-Rockland-Westchester (3.3 percent).
Statewide, there was a 4.9 percent year-over-year rise in nonfarm employment, with the net addition of 441,500 jobs, according to the DOL.
By sector, the largest net job gains were in professional and business services, which added 99,900 jobs; leisure and hospitality, which added 94,500 jobs; and education and health services, which added 92,900 jobs in the last year.
