Levy: Mayor Adams concedes immigration stresses budgets: Duh

New York City Mayor Eric Adams just woke up and found out that a massive influx of illegal aliens will strain the government infrastructure and its taxpayers’ ability to deal with unauthorized newcomers.

What took this guy so long to figure out the obvious?

Adam’s epiphany would be comical if the ramifications were not so severe.

He made the incredible statement that: “We have not asked for this.”  But of course, you did.

What did you think you were doing when you proudly declared that New York would be a sanctuary city? You loved virtue-signaling to the special interests, the illegal immigration lobby, and the politically correct elites. But you never did take a moment to consider what the economic, public safety and humanitarian consequences would be to this frivolous and unsupportable position. But now that busloads of illegal immigrants are being delivered to your doorstep, courtesy of southern governors, your knickers are in a knot.

What did you think the southern states were dealing with over the last decade with this uncontrolled flow of humanity emanating from Central America.

The porous border was brought under control with the Remain in Mexico policy and cooperative efforts with Central American leaders, who were suddenly taking efforts to control the flow once they were threatened with retaliatory tariffs.

All the new administration had to do was leave things alone. But, instead, President Biden followed through on his announcement to the world in a 2020 debate that the millions of asylum seekers around the globe should “immediately surge the border.”

And a surge we got – almost five million and counting.

As these millions have once again been flowing over the border since January 2021, few in the media, and fewer leaders of our major cities, seemed to give a hoot. It wasn’t their problem –  or so they thought. But now southern governors have made it a problem for northern officials as well.

We can reflect on whether this was a tawdry political gimmick or a brilliant strategy, but it certainly has focused attention on the issue.

Instead of just pleading with the feds to give him more money or bashing the southern governors for making big northern cities share the load, why aren’t Adams and the media going to the source of the problem?

Why aren’t they questioning the federal administration’s policy of ending the Remain in Mexico policy for asylum-seekers. It’s not brain surgery as to what would solve this problem. It’s not immigration reform, which is just codewords for amnesty. There’s no congressional legislation needed. Just go back to what was working in December 2020.

The most significant development of these busloads of immigrants arriving to New York is the fact that, for the first time, many of these big city leaders and their allies are conceding that unchecked, illegal immigration creates chaos.

Suddenly, Adams is howling what we’ve known for quite some time.

Indeed, illegal immigration has a significant deleterious economic impact on the host communities. I tried to make these points as county executive over a decade ago. I saw how our emergency rooms and schools were getting overwhelmed and how the costs were going to be significant on our already over-beleaguered taxpayers.

I called for more legal immigration, but a clamping down on the illegal variety that simply promoted an underground illegal economy that put legitimate businesses into bankruptcy and led to 60 single men being stuffed into 900 square foot fire traps.

In speaking out against these developments, I and other officials opposed to illegal immigration were branded by the politically correct crowd in media, academia and the radical advocacy sectors as being bigoted, anti-Hispanic, xenophobes.

To mayor Eric Adams, I say: Welcome to the club.  Had our warnings been heeded over a decade ago, you would not be facing this crisis today.
