100 Black Men of America has granted a charter to a downstate New York group.

The nonprofit group, which aims to improve the quality of life and enhance educational and economic opportunities for African Americans, has granted charter membership to  100 Black Men of Eastern New York.

The new charter aims to serve the African American community in eastern New York in education, health and wellness, advocacy, mentoring, community development, leadership development, and economic empowerment.

“Together we will bring to bear every ounce of our ability to have a positive impact on our problems, challenges, and opportunities, and provide viable solutions,” Phis Andrews, the charter’s president, said in a statement.

A membership-based organization, the charter’s founding board of directors include Andrews, John Nedd, and Desmond Horsham-Brathwaite. Nedd is the charter’s secretary.

Andrews has served as a two-term past president of another local chapter of 100 Black Men of America.  He is also president of the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce.

The new chapter was formed to address current issues the community, and build on the foundation of the men “who paved the way for a more just and equitable society,” according to a news release.
