Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi will be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations next year, the government has confirmed.

Al Sisi will be in India on Jan. 26, 2023 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement on Sunday.

This is the first time that President of the Arab Republic of Egypt will be the chief guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations.

“India and Egypt enjoy warm and friendly relations based on civilizational and deep-rooted people-to-people ties. Both countries are celebrating the 75th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations this year,” it added.

Furthermore, Egypt has been invited as a ‘guest country’ during India’s Presidency of G-20 in 2022-23.

India has not had a foreign dignitary as the chief guest for the Republic Day celebrations in 2021 and 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The last guest was invited to the country was then Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in 2020.
