Long Island construction employment ticks higher

Construction employment on Long Island increased slightly in August, after declining the previous month. 

Nassau and Suffolk counties added 1,100 construction jobs from August 2021 to August 2022, a 1 percent year-over-year gain, rising from 81,100 to 82,200, according to a report from the Associated General Contractors of America. 

Regionally, the number of construction jobs in New York City was virtually unchanged, losing 400 construction jobs from August 2021 to August 2022. In those 12 months, construction employment in New York City fell from 141,900 to 141,500. 

Construction employment in the Orange/Rockland/Westchester area was up 7 percent, adding 3,100 jobs from August 2021 to August 2022. 

Between August 2021 and August 2022, construction employment rose in 246 metro areas, declined in 57 metro areas and remained flat in 55 areas, according to the AGCA report. 

The metro areas seeing the largest drops in construction employment from August 2021 to August 2022 include the Orlando, Fla. area, which lost 5,500 jobs for a 7 percent drop; the Richmond, Va. area, which lost 3,500 jobs for an 8 percent drop; and the Austin, Texas area, down 2,800 jobs for a 4 percent decline. 

Metro areas adding the most construction jobs over the last year include the Houston area, which gained 33,500 jobs for a 16 percent rise; the Seattle area, which gained 8,800 jobs for an 8 percent increase; and the Los Angeles area, which added 8,300 jobs for a 6 percent gain.
