On Long Island, voters have their say

Democrats and Republicans had their share of victories in New York.

Democrat Kathy Hochul became the first woman elected New York governor, winning the office outright that she took over in 2021 when former Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned. She defeated Republican congressman Lee Zeldin, an ally of Donald Trump who ran a campaign focused on fear of violent crime.

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer was elected to a fifth term Tuesday, easily defeating a Republican political commentator, but will have to wait to learn whether he’ll be able to keep his title as Senate majority leader. The 71-year-old Brooklyn native defeated Joe Pinion, who hosted a program on the conservative TV channel Newsmax and faced long odds in a state where Democrats greatly outnumber Republicans. While the nation awaits final election results, it is still unclear whether Schumer will remain majority leader.

Democrat Letitia James was elected to a second term as New York’s attorney general, an office she has used to pursue former President Donald Trump and a list of other powerful targets. James on Tuesday defeated Republican Michael Henry, a Queens lawyer who was endorsed by various police unions but faced long odds against one of the state’s most powerful Democrats.

New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli won the New York State comptroller race, defeating challenger Paul Rodriquez, a Republican on Election Day.

On Long Island, Republicans picked up a House seat as George Santos defeated Democrat Robert Zimmerman in the 3rd Congressional District, to replace U.S. Rep Tom Suozzi, a Democrat, who did not seek re-election.

In the 2nd Congressional District, incumbent Andrew Garbarino, a Republican, defeated Jackie Gordon, a Democrat.

In the 1st Congressional District, Nick LaLota, a Republican, defeated Bridget Fleming, a Suffolk legislator, who both sought to fill the seat by Zeldin, who this year ran against Hochul for governor.

And in the race for the 4th Congressional District Anthony D’Esposito, a Republican, defeated Laura Gillen, a Democrat; that seat is held by U.S. Rep. Kathleen Rice, a Democrat, who did not seek re-election.

No word yet on whether Republicans or Democrats will maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives as the nation awaits final results of the election.

In the New York State Senate race, both Democrats and Republicans on Long Island vied for influence in Albany. In the 1st District, incumbent Anthony Palumbo, a Republican, defeated Skyler Johnson a Democrat. And in the 2nd District, Mario Mattera, a Republican, defeated Susan Berland, a Democrat. In the 3rd District, Dean Murray, a Republican, defeated Farzeen Bham.

And a winner has not yet been declared in the 4th District, where Monica Martinez, a Democrat, was holding the lead with 51% over Wendy Rodriguez, a Republican with 49% of the vote.

In the 5th District, Steven Rhoads, a Republican, defeated John Brooks, a Democrat. In the 6th District, incumbent Kevin Thomas, a Democrat, defeated James Coll, a Republican.

In the 7th District, Jack Martins, a Republican, defeated incumbent Anna Kaplan, a Democrat.

In the 8th District, Alexis Weik, a Republican, defeated John Alberts, a Democrat.

And in Suffolk County, incumbent John M. Kennedy Jr., a Republican, defeated Thomas E. Dolan in the race for Suffolk County comptroller.
